Fish on, and on, and on
The photo above of Bhajan pretty much sums up the sleep situation for the season. Sleep whenever you can, wherever you can. The guys mostly get two hour chunks of sleep here and there. The fish are plentiful, and the openers are pretty much around the clock.
Mike has been fishing the Nushagak River since the beginning of the season. He's in a radio group with a few other boats from Homer. They share info about different fishing areas and generally stick together. Mike wanted to stay in the Nushagak, but the group was ready to try a different river, so he decided sticking with them would be the best move. There are some lifetime fishermen in the group, and they have tons of knowledge to share.
They're currently in transit to the Naknek and Kvichak Rivers, where the run is usually huge this time of the year. Mike hasn't fished much here before, so learning the area from fellow fishermen will be great. As of today, the run has reached 46 million sockeye salmon (!!!). The total run was predicted at over 75 million, so there are still tons of fish to come.
We've already caught more than our total catch last season, so the crew is stoked. They're also stoked that transferring to a new district means you have to wait 48 hours before fishing again. That means sleep! They'll get lots of it and will be able to start fresh for this next big push.
Thanks for following along!

The time has come when sleep comes in two hour chunks and the deck of the Courageous is filled with fish. The crew is working around the clock, harvesting the world's best wild Alaska sockeye salmon to fill your freezers.

We've been super busy with preseason tasks the past few weeks, and now the F/V Courageous and its crew are on their way to Bristol Bay.
