KNOW YOUR FISHERMAN

The O'Laires- F/V Courageous

Each summer, we harvest sockeye salmon in Bristol Bay, Alaska aboard our 32-foot gillnetter, the F/V Courageous. The rest of the year, we live on a small homestead in Homer, Alaska. We ship shares of our wild Alaska salmon and seafood directly to your doorstep year-round.

Mike has been commercial fishing for over 25 years. He moved to Alaska in 2000, and started fishing immediately. He has fished for wild Alaska salmon, cod, black cod, halibut, and crab throughout this fishing career.

He started fishing in Bristol Bay as a crew member on  board the F/V Dr. Jack. After many years of hard work, we were able to buy a fishing permit for Bristol Bay, and the F/V Courageous.

Mike grew up in Bellingham, Washington and is an avid adventurer and outdoorsman who is passionate about doing what he can to ensure the vast Alaska wilderness will be around for generations to come.

Maddie grew up in Dallas, Texas-  a far cry from the Alaska wilderness. She graduated from Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland in 2009. Two weeks after graduation, Maddie moved to Thailand to teach English and travel around Southeast Asia.

While trekking the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal, she met an enthusiastic father/son duo, who claimed they lived in the most beautiful place in the entire world- Homer, Alaska.

After wrapping up her teaching program in 2010 and moving back to Dallas for a couple of months, she decided to visit her new friends in Homer. She booked a one-way ticket  and quickly decided to stay.

Maddie and Mike met in 2011 while rock climbing in the local gym, and the rest is history.

Maddie manages all the operations of Smart Source Seafood. Mike fishes Bristol Bay and catches thousands of wild Alaska sockeye salmon each year.

We take great pride in our catch- each fish is hand-picked and iced immediately. We're honored to bring you delicious, dependable wild Alaska seafood direct from our fishing family, and hope you love our salmon as much as we do.
