Mike's home from fishing and we couldn't be happier after a stellar sockeye salmon season. In total, Bristol Bay fisherman harvested a whopping 34 million sockeye salmon, out of a total run of over 51 million fish. The total run came in 10 million fish over the forecast, making for the best fishing season many fishermen have ever seen. Since harvests in other Alaska fisheries is falling short, markets are eager to buy up as much Bristol Bay sockeye salmon as possible, which means a better price for the catch. All good news for fishing families like ours.
In other exciting news, we're expecting a new addition to our family any day now. Getting Mike home in time for our baby boy's birth, made the end of the fishing season especially exciting. He made it back 6 days before the due date. After weeks of telling our little guy to hold out for dad to get home, we're so ready to meet him and are patiently awaiting his arrival.
Mike had a special trip home from Bristol Bay. Our friend, Stephanie, is a float plane pilot, and she takes groups to Brooks Camp in Katmai National Park and Preserve. She picked Mike up, then landed in the park to pick up a group of tourist to bring back to Homer. He got to spend a few hours in the park watching huge brown bears play and catch the same fish he'd been catching for weeks- a real treat! If you ever make it to Alaska, make sure to add bear viewing to your list of activities to check out.
We're still looking at a September shipping date for all preorders. Stay tuned!
