Fishing is always an adventure, and this year is no exception. The crew of the F/V Dr. Jack has been fishing around the clock the last few days, after an enormous push of sockeye salmon came through on July 2nd. There are 4 main fishing districts in Bristol Bay- Nushagak, Egegik, Ugashik. and Naknek-Kvichak. As I mentioned before, we fish exclusively in the Egegik district. There are usually anywhere from 350-450 other boats fishing in Egegik as well. On July 2nd, Egegik alone caught over one million fish, and all districts combined caught close to 3.5 million fish. Catching over one million fish in one day in a single district is extremely rare. Needless to say, it's been a great few days for families like ours that make their livelihood on the water.
In the last update, I explained how we keep our fisheries sustainable with daily monitoring of salmon escapement levels. At the beginning of the season, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game sets goals of how many salmon should escape to keep stocks healthy. This season, the goal in Egegik was 800,000- 2,000,000 fish. As of right now, we're at around 1,250,000. Since the lower end of the goal has been met, and there's a very good chance another 750,000 sockeye salmon will escape the fishermen's nets, we will likely move into a schedule where we're fishing around the clock for the rest of the season. Alaska commercial fishing at it's finest!
Thank you for choosing us as your fishing family and source of premium wild Alaska salmon. We hope you enjoy our updates from the fishing grounds.
