How to Start A Buying Club

Want the best prices on your wild Alaska seafood? Start a fish buying club! We make it simple to get started, and you'll save up to 40% on our wild Alaska seafood.

Large volumes get big breaks. While we do offer a nice discount when you buy in bulk joining or starting a buying club gets you the best pricing. All you need is a few fish loving friends, neighbors, or family members, and you'll meet our 140 lb. minimum in no time.

Here's the deal:

What is a Buying Club?

A buying club is a group of people who meet at a predetermined date, place and time to pick up their salmon, cod, smoked salmon, or halibut. We schedule a shipping date with the group coordinator, then ship all the fish on a date that works for the group.

Because we aren't shipping directly to every members' doorstep, the group saves on shipping. Our Buying Club members get the benefit of buying high quality delicious healthy salmon at the lowest price we can offer.

How does a buying club work?

The first step is to gather a handful of friends, co-workers, neighbors or family members who are interested in buying our delicious, healthy, sustainable seafood. Finding these people can be as easy as sending off a group email with a short message and a link to our website so they can see what you are talking about. Once you think you have a group together, give us a call or send an email and we can discuss specifics.

How do I start a buying club?

To start a buying club in your area, you will need a minimum of 140 lbs. in orders. Your local CSAs and co-ops are excellent places to find people who want wild-caught Alaska seafood. Reaching 140 lbs. is as simple as you and 6 other people placing 20 pound orders. Keep in mind, most of our customers order between 30-50 pounds to enjoy throughout the year. Once you try our seafood, you'll see that 20 pounds will go faster than you think. Plus, it can be split up between more friends or family and it makes great gifts too.

We recently had a customer that was interested in starting a buying club, but thought she would be just under the minimum order. She posted on her neighborhood's Facebook group, and the orders started pouring in! The minimum was met before she even placed her own order.

Ordering is easy!

Everyone can order directly through our website by selecting the Buying Club item on the purchase page.  Simply enter your buying club's name in the "Notes" section, so we know where to send your salmon. Once everyone has ordered, we'll send the coordinator a list of everyone's names, emails, and order, so they can split it up when it's delivered.

Splitting it up is easy too!

Our sockeye salmon portions, smoked salmon, and salmon burger are packaged in liners that are 5 lbs. each. Halibut, cod, and salmon fillets are packaged in liners that are 10 lbs. each. This makes it's super easy for the coordinator, because they don't have to weigh anything.

Need help finding enough people to start a buying club?

Current buying clubs have sent an email to their friends or groups they belong to (i.e., clubs, social groups, community list-serves, church groups, CSAs, co-ops, etc.) with a link to our website. You can also share one of our posts on Facebook (like us at Smart Source Seafood) and Instagram (@smartsourceseafood). Once a buying club is established, it usually grows on its own members word-of-mouth advertising. We have several buying clubs across the country, so if you don't feel like setting one up yourself, ask us if there's one in your area.
